VoIP

Posted on Thursday 30 November 2006

VoIP. Many articles have been written about VoIP and much has been said about VoIP. What about some of the points of VoIP? What questions can we ask about VoIP that if we can find the answers for, how can it benefit us as end users?

I had a quick browse through a great web site called Tech Faq which just about nails all details about anything technical. Be sure to bookmark this site for future reference on any technical advice you are seeking. What drew my attention at first glance was the VoIP FAQS menu on the left. I had no idea so many questions could be asked about VoIP!

The Tech Faq highlighted several areas of VoIP. Some basic facts are VoIP is short for Voice over Internet Protocol. Simply meaning being able to transfer our voice as data over the Internet. Generally, there are three ways to use VoIP. Using a special VoIP telephone. Using a standard telephone with a VoIP adapter and using VoIP through your computer’s software, microphone and speakers. For more technical information, Tech FAQ can help you to no end.

Stock Market Trading

Posted on Wednesday 29 November 2006

Finding ways to invest your finances can be tricky at times. There are so many crooks out there and a lot of crooks appear as legitimate companies. Everything looks shiny and polished on the outside but you find out soon enough what they are about on the inside when your wallet starts feeling a bit lighter.

There are many ways to invest. However, usually the safest investments are long term ones and we must have the absolute best patience to ride it out to the end. Some take years of even decades to see a good result.

The Stock Market should be handled the very same way. Too many view Online Stock Market Trading as gambling. How? Usually, people investing in the Stock Market are wanting to get rich quick. Unfortunately, many get their fingers burnt from this attitude and very few actually do get rich quick this way. Playing the Stock Market needs strategy and planning with some experienced advice from a broker in the Stock Market industry.

It is suggested to subscribe to Stock Market newsletters to get a good understanding of ebbs and flows and to learn the lingo. Then, to do a paper trade. A paper trade is like using Monopoly money instead of real money. This is a good way to see how it works without losing out through inexperience.

Many have made a great career from Stock Market Trading. Mainly because they listen and learn and never make snap judgments. This is where the old cliche “Patience is a Virtue” can be used.

Combined Network Power of Blogs

Posted on Monday 27 November 2006

Let’s talk briefly about the Metcalfe Law, which states that the value of a network is equal to n^2 - where n is the number of nodes in the network. Value is a relative term, so think about it this way - a network with 4 nodes would have a value of 16 (4^2), which would be 400% more valuable than a network with 2 nodes (2^2=4). Did I lose anyone yet? Originally, Metcalfe was looking at telecommunications networks, but let’s apply it to blogs. Payperpost is leveraging the Metcalfe Law by allowing the Long Tail bloggers participate in the growing demand for advertisers desire to advertise on blogs. The Long Tail bloggers are the bloggers that have not attained the much desired A-List designation for their blogs. PPP gives the advertiser a much broader and deeper pool of blogs and bloggers from which to select. Well, select is not exactly correct - as the blogger has the opportunity to self select - they get to choose who and what they blog about. Advertisers and bloggers benefit from a very valuable network created by PPP, which will certainly continue to grow and evolve.

When Cell Phones Meet VoIP

Posted on Monday 27 November 2006

Cell phones and VoIP are two major communication technologies that contribute to the growth of a global communication skin - a layered networks of communication channels that allows everyone to connect to everyone else at every location at anytime. Most consumers are familiar with cell phones and use them everyday. But they may not know as much as you like to know about VoIP. VoIP is the acronym of Voice over Internet Protocol. To put it simple, VoIP technology allows you to make phone calls (local, long distance or international) with an Internet connection. Beside a standard phone and an Internet connection, all you need is a VoIP router to make and take phone calls. You don’t have to have a computer to use VoIP for phone calls. To get better voice quality, you’ll need a high speed Internet connection, such as Cable Modem or DSL (digital subscriber line).

The integration of cell phone with VoIP is the combination of further convenience with low cost. There’re two different approaches to make cell phones work with VoIP.

1) Cell phone service providers have taken the approach to make your existing cell phones to connect to their wireless Internet connection or hotspots. For instance, TalkPlus launched the world’s first cellular VoIP service in 2005. The service allows people to make VoIP calls with existing cell phones without needing a broadband network. This is a huge advantage compared with the standard VoIP which requires a broadband Internet connection.

2) VoIP providers have taken the approach to manufacture wireless Internet phones to work with their existing wireless Internet access point worldwide, instead of connecting to your own broadband Internet connection. For instance, Vonage WiFi UTStarcom F1000, a wireless Internet phone, allows current Vonage VoIP customers to connect to wireless Internet access points worldwide, also known as WiFi hotspots.

The difference is about the cost of using cell phone with VoIP. If you use a VoIP from a mobile phone service provider, you don’t have to buy a new Internet phone to use the VoIP, but you’ll have to pay extra for every minute you use. To use mobile phone with a VoIP service, you do need to buy an Internet phone, but you don’t have to pay extra regardless how many minutes you use a month.

If your current mobile phone service provider doesn’t offer VoIP service and you happen to have a GSM type of cell phone, you could unlock your current cell phone to easily switch to cell phone service that supports VoIP. This will allow you to switch services, but still keep the cell phone that you are using. By downloading cell phone unlock codes; you are able to switch services without any of the hassle. Mobile phone unlocking is one of the best features on a cell phone!
