Desde ayer oficialmente Apple es la mayor compañía del mundo según su capitalización bursátil, superando a la que era la única posible competidora, la supergigantesca petrolera Exxon Mobil. Al cierre de la bolsa el miércoles, AAPL alcanzó los 337.000 millones de dólares mientras que XOM tan solo llegaba a los 330.000 millones.

No está mal para algo que dos tipos empezaron en un garaje.

La capitalización bursátil (Market Cap.) es un término un tanto relativo, pero da una idea aproximada del tamaño de una empresa, y permite compararla con otras. No es exactamente que la empresa tenga ese dinero, ni que se pueda «comprar» por ese dinero (aunque lo tuvieras), pero casi, casi: es más bien «el consenso sobre lo que la gente –o los mercados– creen que vale la empresa».

De hecho estos días convulsos que los valores pueden variar un 5 o 10 por ciento diario arriba o abajo las empresas siguen siendo más o menos las mismas, pero sus perspectivas y lo que la gente cree que van a ganar y repartir en beneficios entre los accionistas tiene una gran «volatilidad».
