General Summary:

Sonos products use a wireless mesh network technology built on IEEE 802.11n called SonosNet. As Manager of Wireless Networking Software, you will lead the team that develops and enhances SonosNet.


Responsibilities:

Hire and mentor a team of experts in wireless networking hardware device drivers, routing algorithms, rate control algorithms, error control codes, and related technologies.
Lead the evaluation from a software perspective of new wireless networking hardware, and make recommendations that direct the hardware selection process.
Develop, prioritize, and lead the implementation of a roadmap of performance and scalability enhancements to SonosNet algorithms.
Direct the design of performance metrics for SonosNet algorithms.
Work with the Quality Assurance and Customer Support organizations to understand the real-world performance of Sonos wireless products and, where appropriate, drive critical problems to resolution.
Own resource planning and budgeting for the Wireless Networking Software team, understanding the product roadmap and looking ahead to anticipate future staffing needs.
Make resource prioritization decisions when conflicts arise.
Set goals, conduct performance reviews, and plan career development with direct reports.



Qualifications

Mastery of the complete wireless networking stack, including 2.4/5GHz OFDM PHY, 802.11n MIMO PHY and related techniques, CSMA/CA MAC, 802.11 higher level MAC, routing algorithms and protocols, Ethernet, IP, TCP, and UDP.
Knowledge of mesh networks and related technologies.
Knowledge of a UNIX-like operating system kernel (Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, etc).
Proven ability to identify, hire, and manage excellent software engineers.
Demonstrated ability to deliver excellent software under a tight deadline, and with multiple branches of development.
Familiarity with the C programming language.
Minimum Bachelor?s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or related discipline.
Minimum ten years of software engineering experience.

Position: Software Engineer, Wireless Networking
Location: Cambridge, MA or Santa Barbara, CA
Occasional travel within US required.

General Summary:

Sonos products use a wireless mesh network technology built on IEEE 802.11n called SonosNet. SonosNet automatically calculates the best path for audio data to reach any part of a large home, taking advantage of wired and wireless links to forward data from one place to another with as little delay and interference as possible.

As a software engineer on the wireless networking team, you will be responsible for enhancing and maintaining the industry?s most innovative networking solution for streaming audio around the home.

Requirements:

Use your knowledge of the C programming language, Linux kernel mode development, and network device drivers, to add support to Sonos products for the latest, highest performing wireless networking hardware
Use your understanding of IEEE 802.11, Ethernet, and network organization and routing algorithms, to improve the performance of SonosNet, and scale its mesh networking algorithms to larger and more complex networks
Build relationships with networking hardware vendors, to understand their roadmaps, help select the right hardware, and debug critical problems
Work with the rest of the ZonePlayer software development team to understand the audio streaming application software being built on top of SonosNet, and suggest ways in which the higher level software may make most efficient use of the underlying network
Work with the quality assurance team to devise metrics for measuring network performance, and design enhancements to improve SonosNet performance against those metrics



Qualifications

Knowledge of the Linux 2.6 operating system kernel, with mastery of the areas of network device drivers, memory management, and locking/synchronization
Understanding of the complete network stack, including 2.4/5GHz OFDM PHY, IEEE 802.11n MIMO PHY and related techniques, CSMA/CA MAC, 802.11 higher level MAC, routing algorithms and protocols, Ethernet, IP, TCP, and UDP
Knowledge of kernel mode and network debugging techniques (kgdb, packet sniffers, logging, etc.)
Knowledge of mesh networks and related technologies is a plus
Familiarity with Atheros AR5xxx and AR9xxx chipsets, and familiarity with MADWiFi or AR9k Atheros device drivers, are a plus
Minimum Bachelor?s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or related discipline
