Cloud Computing Basics: Amazon, IBM, Savvis, Joyent and Google Cloud Offerings

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud began in August 2006 and is one of the most popular cloud computing companies today. They provide clients with an efficient way of scalable compute capability in the cloud. Clients can instantly scale up or scale down their compute capability based on real time demands.
Clients have various choices in their configuration options based on what they need. Since applications will be running on virtual computer called instances, a client can choose which instance to get. The standard instance consists of 1.7 GB of memory and 160 GB of storage while the cluster compute instance has 23 GB of memory and 1680 GB of storage.
Savvis
Savvis came about by the merging of 2 companies, DiamondNet and Bridge. Its entry into cloud computing began in 2002 when Intel selected Savvis to take over its clients in its web hosting division. This was the start of the company’s vision of providing excellent web based services.
Savvis is the leading provider in cloud based security. It can provide clients with virtual machines and network security which other cloud companies don’t offer. They offer their clients solutions specifically designed for the enterprise level. Its cost effective packages and use of cutting g edge technology makes this company one of the leaders in cloud computing today.
Joyent
Joyent is a cloud computing company that started in 2004. It is popular among the Fortune 500 companies in the U.S. Some of its popular clients are LinkedIn, FaceBook and Twitter. The company takes pride in being the only one that develops its own technology stack, runs a cloud on that stack, and provides assistance to anyone who wants to run a cloud as well.
Clients are provided with different pricing schemes for the different options available. The plans are based on ¼ CPU guaranteed per GB of RAM. If a client does not know what plan to get then Joyent assists them by determining their load.
Google is one of the largest cloud computing companies today that offer various services such as a search engine, email service, video sharing, the list goes on. Their cloud computing product is the Google App Engine where its clients can run and host their web applications on the same system that runs Google’s applications.
Applications can be developed using Java or Python. Google provides you with the necessary tools required whichever of these two you choose. You can store up to 500 MB of applications and your bandwidth is more than enough to support 5 million page views monthly.
IBM
IBM is a well known company that had its beginnings in selling computers. As technology has evolved so has the portfolio of IBM. Today’s IBM is more focused in providing its clients with a cost effective and secure environment for their cloud infrastructure. Its cloud centers are spread out to dozens of locations worldwide to provide quality service everywhere.
IBM offers many advantageous features to its clients such as IBM Smart Development and Test (where enterprise level features are available), LotusLive ( IBM’s premiere online collaboration, email solution and web conferencing tool) and IBM Informational Protection Services ( where your data is backed up in the cloud).
