Where Several Words Are Emphatic, Make It Clear Which Is The Most Emphatic. Emphasis Can Sometimes Be Given By Adding An Epithet, Or An Intensifying Word
There are many techniques that are used in the art of writing to make the piece of work interesting apart from making the article grammatically correct, with the right punctuation and choice of words. The use of emphasis in writing helps to give an idea or expression some importance. Emphasis is a good writing skill but you should be careful not to make it look like exaggeration. When over used, the technique will not have any impact on the reader. Emphatic words are supposed to stand out whenever you use them. With emphasis, you have to arrange the structure of words correctly, use appropriate punctuation and formatting.
Emphasizing words through speaking may be easier as this can be achieved through change of tone but when it comes to writing, the reader has to identify very fast which word is emphasized by where and how you have used it. Words that are used for emphasis are best identified when they stand in the right position such as at the beginning or at the end of a sentence. A sentence or expression may have more than one emphatic word in which case it would be necessary to make the reader know which is the most important.
Whether the emphasis is placed at the beginning or at the end will depend on what effect you want to have on the readers. When used at the end of an expression, the emphatic words can be a good way to give the reader something to think about or some lasting impression at the end of reading. You may also decide to give the reader the strongest point you have first before giving further details. Emphasis can also be achieved by italicizing or bolding, use of different colors or capitalizing the words you intend to show emphasis with.
There are words too that can be used to show emphasis such as intensifying words. You can use intensifiers to make the reader know which the most emphasized word is when you have used many in the same expression. Intensifiers that you can use include very, really, quite, completely, so, really, totally and definitely. In a sentence such as, “Many people were helpless after the storm,” you can add an intensifier to read, “So many people were helpless after the storm.” The word “so” acts as an intensifier. The other emphasis technique in writing is the use of antithesis when you want to contrast two ideas.
The way the sentence is written should draw the reader to the contrast. With the right choice of emphatic words, the technique can be used to make the points you are trying to explain in your writing more understandable. Using inappropriate words may leave the reader confused and may not react the way you intended. Use emphasis when you want to persuade the reader into doing or believing in something and apply other useful techniques when you have more than one emphatic word in an expression such as intensifiers, epithets and antithesis.
